The short answer
Shut off the water, install the bypass and connect inlet and outlet in the right direction, run the drain line with an air gap, connect the brine line, add water and salt, then start a regeneration.
Parts you'll need
- A bypass valve for your valve family, such as Fleck 60041SS Bypass Valve, Fleck 60049 Bypass Valve.
- Drain line tubing and any drain flow control the valve maker specifies.
- Brine line and a brine tank with a safety float, such as Vistar Water Technologies BT-1536 Brine Tank.
Order of work
- Shut off the main and relieve pressure.
- Fit the bypass and connect inlet and outlet in the flow direction marked on the valve.
- Run the drain line to an approved drain with an air gap.
- Connect the brine line; add water and salt as the maker says.
- Restore water slowly in bypass, then put the unit in service and run a manual regeneration.
Codes and manuals
SafetyDrain connections and plumbing changes are covered by local code; follow the maker's manual and use a licensed plumber where the code or maker requires one.
